About Robin
I am a clinical oncology pharmacist by trade, meaning I spend Monday through Friday in a hospital, doing a job I genuinely love. As far as my free time goes, animals have always spoken to me, comforted me, and provided me with a sense of home. In my adult life, I first got one dog, which has now turned into 10 because like potato chips, you cant just have one. I was connected with a friend on Facebook who began posting photos of horses. When I further inquired, she said “Robin, you have to come down and see”, and that was when I got in the car and drove the 2 hours to Fountain, Colorado and visited Dreamcatchers Equine Rescue for the first time. I love animals, but noticed something different about horses in particular: their soulfulness and calming nature, and I was drawn to the softness in their eyes. On my first trip to the rescue, I met 4 year old Hershey who due to human neglect and injury in his early life, would never be sound or rideable. I was not looking to ride, as I only had as a kid at summer camp a handful of times, so it felt right that he chose me. laying his head on my shoulder and melting into my arms, I made the decision to adopt a horse for the first time. Not knowing the first thing about equine care or maintenance, I made it my goal to learn as much as I could and was mentored by Julie Demusey, the owner and operator of Dreamcatchers.
After adopting Hershey, I began researching Killbuyers and Kill Pens in my area and began bailing horses off the feedlot, before they could be shipped for slaughter. One horse quickly grew into 25, all except Hershey rescued directly from the kill pen. Every horse I rescued was quarantined and vetted, and I love to see the transformation of seeing sick injured horses becoming valued members of my herd.
In May 2023, I purchased what would become Healing Souls Ranch, a safe landing spot for more than 30 horses. I was drawn to it not only because of the beautiful view, quiet environment, and open feel, but the peace I knew it would bring to humans and horses alike. Over time, it has become a positive, inclusive, and supportive place for people to come together, take a deep breath, and let their worries go. There is a type of serenity that is felt when walking into the field, and being quietly and gently greeted by the herd. A lot of my horses are greys, who I find to be especially soulful, and they have taught me a lot. On the days I rush to the ranch, with the weight of the world on my shoulders, and immediately go in looking for an instant feeling of refresh, the horses appear more distant, and disconnected. I have learned over time, the importance of pausing, waiting a moment, taking a deep breath, and letting things go. The horses teach you to regulate yourself, because that is what they need, and it makes my time with them much more valuable. I look forward to every day there, not only because of the deep, lasting impact that these horses have made on me, in my life, but because of the community, brought together at Healing Souls Ranch.
About Lisa
As the Executive Director of Healing Souls Ranch, my journey with horses began at age 7 in Wyoming, where I quickly fell in love with these incredible animals. My father bought us three horses that were considered hard to handle, but they turned out to be the gentlest companions. I grew up participating in gymkhanas and was honored to be crowned Princess of the Dusty Riders Saddle Club. I experienced the healing power of equine therapy long before I even knew what it was; the connection and comfort I found with horses shaped me in ways I didn’t fully understand at the time, but it sparked a lifelong passion for helping others experience that same healing.
Over the past 22 years, I’ve owned and cared for horses, starting with my first, Trooper, whom I adopted from Colorado Horse Rescue. The experience of rescuing Trooper and volunteering at CHR, where I later served as a board member, inspired my dedication to working with nonprofits and advocating for animal welfare. I believe there is a critical need for education about horses and equine therapy, and I am committed to being a voice for these beautiful animals.
I’m certified in equine massage therapy and am pursuing equine Craniosacral therapy to deepen my ability to support equine well-being. With over 15 years of experience in Public Relations, Media Relations, and Marketing, I am using my skills to champion the mission of Healing Souls Ranch, where we connect horses and humans for transformative healing experiences. My herd includes Trooper, JJ, Diva, and Diamonds Posse (DP), each teaching me, along with the 33 other horses at Healing Souls Ranch, the power of resilience and the importance of compassion every day.
